Why Volunteering Matters Now More Than Ever
Across communities today, many people feel disconnected, overwhelmed, or unsure how to make a meaningful difference.
In moments like these, taking action often becomes the strongest antidote. Volunteering doesn’t just help others – it restores purpose, builds connection, and creates hope.
On Long Island, Island Harvest Food Bank offers a clear example of what this looks like in practice. For more than three decades, the organization has worked to end food insecurity and reduce food waste on Long Island, ensuring nutritious food reaches neighbors who need it most. At the center of that effort is a powerful force: volunteers.
In Times Like These, Action Is the Antidote
Volunteering has increasingly become a way for individuals and families to reconnect with their communities while addressing real needs.
At Island Harvest, thousands of volunteers choose action every year. In 2025 alone, volunteers dedicated more than 62,000 hours of service, supporting food distribution, farming, and community outreach efforts. Today, 19,500 registered volunteers stand behind our mission – individuals, families, students, retirees, businesses, and community groups united by a shared commitment to care for one another.
These numbers reflect something deeper than statistics. They represent lives touched – one shift, one box, one conversation at a time.

Real Impact, Real People
When you volunteer with Island Harvest, your time has a direct and tangible impact. Every role supports a vital piece of the hunger-relief system that serves hundreds of thousands of Long Islanders each year.
Volunteer opportunities with Island Harvest are designed to meet people where they are, whether they can give a few hours, a full day, or make an ongoing commitment:
- Warehouse & Distribution Support
Volunteers help sort donations, pack food boxes, and prepare items for distribution to pantries, soup kitchens, and community partners. - Mobile Markets & Community Distributions

At our organic farm in Brentwood, volunteers help grow fresh fruits and vegetables that are distributed to local pantries. - Food Drives & Special Events
Volunteers support food drives, fundraising efforts, and community events that help sustain Island Harvest’s year-round operations. - Administrative & Office Support
Behind the scenes, volunteers assist with logistics, data entry, outreach, and coordination ensuring programs run efficiently and effectively.

More Than Service – It’s Connection
Beyond meeting immediate needs, volunteering brings connection and community, providing a sense of belonging and shared purpose.
Many Island Harvest volunteers tell us they come for the mission and stay for the people.
- You meet neighbors you may never have crossed paths with otherwise.
- You work side-by-side with people who share a desire to help.
- You experience the fulfillment that comes from knowing your time truly matters.
In a world that often feels divided or fast-moving, volunteering offers a chance to slow down, work together, and focus on what truly counts: caring for one another.
Be Part of the Solution
When individuals volunteer, they become part of a broader network grounded in compassion, consistency, and shared responsibility. Whether someone is looking to give back, find purpose, meet new people, or model service for the next generation, opportunities exist across Long Island to take part.
