Remembering Linda Breitstone: A Legacy of Compassion and Determination

Linda Breitstone, the founder of Island Harvest Food Bank, passed away this past Monday at her home in Kauai, Hawaii. Diagnosed with late-stage stomach cancer in May, Linda chose to forgo treatment and spent her final days surrounded by friends. She was cremated, and her friends on the island may be planning a memorial service in her honor.

Linda founded Island Harvest Food Bank in 1992 after noticing that food was being discarded at the end of the day at a 7-11 in Rockville Center. Driven by a profound sense of justice and a determination to ensure that excess food reached those in need, Linda conducted extensive research, gathered a dedicated team (including several current board members), and meticulously connected all the necessary dots. Her vision, coupled with her relentless determination, led to the successful establishment of Island Harvest Food Bank.

Even after stepping away from her work with Island Harvest, Linda remained deeply invested in our progress, frequently offering guidance and suggestions.

Her commitment to our mission never wavered, and her influence is still felt within our organization. In addition to her work with Island Harvest, Linda founded her own company in Hawaii, the Crystal Woman Breitstone Collection, which sold crystals and gemstones. More information about her business can be found at Crystal Woman Breitstone Collection.

We invite those who knew Linda to share their memories and stories. Your reflections on her life and the early days of our founding will help us honor her legacy and the tremendous impact she had on our community.

Linda Breitstone's life was a testament to the power of compassion and the difference one person can make. We are honored to continue her legacy, ensuring that healthy food reaches our neighbors in need with dignity and respect.
