Volunteer Opportunities For Kid’s Groups!

Looking for volunteer opportunities you can do with your school club, scout troop, or youth group? There are many ways you can help make a difference in our mission to end hunger and reduce food waste on Long Island!

Turkey and Trimmings Collection Campaign (TTCC): Each November and December, we need dozens of extra volunteers to help at Supermarket Food Collections and other events where we collect turkeys and canned and packaged food, and to help us sort and box donated food.

National Association of Letter Carriers’ Food Drive (NALC): At this annual event, held each May, hundreds of volunteers sort and pack non-perishable food items that are collected by the Letter Carriers and brought to a central processing and distribution location. In 2005, approximately 1.5 million pounds of food was sorted, packed and delivered to community-based, non-profit organizations throughout Long Island.

Special Events: Help at such events as food shows, community fairs, office projects and large food drives. Event days and times vary. Join our e-mail list to be advised of special events!

Plan a Food Raiser or Fundraiser: Have a food collection or organize a fundraiser at your school or club. Call us for our food drive kit or to talk about your ideas for raising funds or food! Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • Have a themed food drive at your school, in your neighborhood or through your group – themes like Sandwich Fixings, Kid’s Stuff, Bringing Up Baby, Hill of Beans or Holiday Trimmings are good ways to get participants excited!
  • Organize a Food Collection at an event: Charge “admission” of a few cans of food at events like plays, sporting events, block party. Work with an existing event or organize your own!
  • Get local businesses involved by asking them to give customers a discount or free item when they bring in food or money to donate to Island Harvest.
  • Do a Supermarket Food Collection. If you are friendly with your local store manager, ask if the group can hand out flyers asking shoppers to purchase an extra can or bag of food for Island Harvest, then collect the food as shoppers leave the store.
  • Raise Money selling baked goodies, bottles of water, crafts like handmade valentines or cards, flowers, or snacks (buy them in bulk) and donate the proceeds to Island Harvest.
  • Host a fundraising get-together like an Ice Cream Social, Nacho Party or Snack Bar – ask families to contribute a few dollars per person to support Island Harvest.

*Adult supervision may be required, depending on type of activity, age of volunteers, and size of group.
