Island Harvest benefits from Girl Scouts
of Nassau County
“Gift
of Caring” Cookie Campaign
Island Harvest is pleased to team up with the Girl Scouts of
Nassau County and its “Gift of Caring” program, through
which girls are asked to think about giving back to the community
by asking their customers to purchase an additional box of cookies
to donate to those less fortunate. The donated world famous Girl
Scout Cookies will be distributed by Island Harvest to child
care centers, food pantries, soup kitchens, homeless shelters,
community residences, and senior citizen groups.
Girl Scout Cookies can bring smiles to those who may not consider
cookies as part of their weekly shopping list and we thank the
local businesses and corporations for their support. Throughout
the Cookie season, all cookie purchases, both individual and
corporate can be donated directly to Island Harvest for distribution
as part of its food rescue program. For more information about
Girl Scouts or how to donate Cookies to Island Harvest, please
contact Donna Rivera-Downey, Director of Marketing at (516) 741-2550,
ext. 260 or visit www.gsnc.org. For more information about Island
Harvest, please contact (516) 294-8528.

September is National 5 A Day Month
Eat your colors every day to stay healthy and fit. Each year
Produce for Better Health Foundation and the National 5 A Day
Partnership take this time to encourage individuals and families
to strengthen their efforts to increase consumption of fruits
and vegetables by thinking color and variety with 5 A Day The
Color Way. A diet full of colorful fruits and vegetables is a
good way to get a wide range of vitamins and minerals your body
needs. For more information, check out the 5 A Day Harvest News
You Can Use under the Education section, or visit www.5aday.org.

Scouting for Food
“To help other people at all times,” is part of
the Boy Scout Oath. Earlier in the year, the scouts of the Theodore
Roosevelt Council, Boy Scouts of America, delivered on that message
through the “Scouting for Food” program. Scouts from
various parts of Nassau County collected non-perishable food
that was donated to Island Harvest. The food was then distributed
to scores of community non-profit organizations. Island Harvest
is honored to partner with the Boy Scouts in this vital service
to others. And to all the Scouts, job well done!

Macy’s Bag Hunger Campaign
Many thanks to the management and employees of Macy’s
that graciously choose Island Harvest’s food rescue program
to be the recipient the proceeds from this year’s Macy’s
Bag Hunger Campaign. Participating store locations included Carle
Place, Manhasset, Green Acres Mall-Valley Stream, South Shore
Mall-Bay Shore, Walt Whitman Mall-Huntington Station; Roosevelt
Field Mall-Garden City; and Sunrise Mall-Massapequa. Macy’s
the way to shop, also knows the way to care.
