While the way you decide to conduct your food drive is completely up to you, most coordinators follow these basic steps:
Decide on the dates, locations, and supplies needed for your drive.
- Register your drive online with Island Harvest with all the information and pick up date needed. (if you don’t have access to a computer, it can mailed or faxed to you).
- Promote your drive to the prospective participants (employee, customers, members, classmates etc.) by: posting our flyers and posters imprinted with your drive information.
- Start collecting food and money!
- At the end of your drive, Island Harvest will pick up and weigh you donations. (If you need an interim pick-up during your drive, call Doreen Principe at 516-294-8528 ext. 14 and she will make arrangements for you.
- The reason for your drive: “PEOPLE NEED FOOD ALL YEAR ROUND.” Please see our other options for food drives to the left. Click here to download our Food Drive Kit.
Selecting Dates
First, decide on dates for your food drive. Food drives can run as little as two hours or for up to two months. Some donors even collect food and money year round. The average drive is usually about 2 to 3 weeks.
Setting a Goal
Setting a goal is a good way to motivate your donors and it provides a sense of accomplishment at the end of your drive.
Choosing Your Locations
If you have multiple locations, you may want to recruit someone at each of those sites to help you manage donations at each building. Select high-traffic areas where the barrels will be noticeable and convenient for donors to access. Be sure to consider safety and security issues when choosing your locations.
Scheduling Delivery and Pickup
Once you have planned your drive, you should contact Doreen Principe at Island Harvest to arrange for delivery of donation envelopes and other supplies you may need to conduct your drive. Please note we can only pick up donations of 150 pounds or more. If you have less than 150 pounds please call us for further details or you can drop it off at any of our three locations.
