Facts About Hunger
Hunger: a condition in which people do not
get enough food to provide the nutrients for active and healthy
lives.
Food Insecurity: when the availability of nutritionally
adequate
and safe foods, or the ability to acquire acceptable foods
in socially acceptable ways, is limited or uncertain.
Food Pantry: a nonprofit organization that
distributes food and other grocery products to needy clients
who then prepare
and use these items where they live.
Soup Kitchen: a place
that serves prepared meals free-of-charge to individuals and
families in need.
Programs
Food Stamps (The Food Card): a federal nutrition
program which helps low-income people buy the food they need
to
stay healthy...
40% of households receiving food stamps have at least one
working adult.
CSFP: the
Commodity Supplemental Food Program provides
supplemental food to New York State residents ages six and
under OR
60 and over.
Summer Food Service Program: federally funded
program operated nationally by the USDA that offers free lunch
during the
summer months to all low-income children ages 18 and
under at various
sites throughout the community.
WIC: the Special Supplemental
Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children... low-income
pregnant women,
or women
with children
under the age of five, who are at nutritional risk
visit a clinic, where a nutritionist provides vouchers for
designated health-producing
food, gives nutritional advice and makes a referral
if a medical
problem surfaces.
The Kids Alliance – Weekend Food to
Go Program: Island
Harvest will be piloting the program in six school
districts throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties. Students
who are
at risk of hunger will be identified by school personnel
and, with permission
from parents/guardian, will be invited to participate
in the program. Back Packs will be distributed on Friday
and
will include
sources of protein, fruit, grain, and dairy. In addition
we will include educational materials and other resource
materials on
nutrition, safe food handling, budget shopping strategies
and much more.
